Want To Know More About 100% Pure Water?

Marilyn: I'm writing about your column regarding water and electrical conductivity. (November 27, 2011) Dissolved gases (or dissolved molecules, such as sugar) in water won't increase its electrical conductivity. After carbon dioxide dissolves, it can then react with water to form ions [hydronium (H3O+) and bicarbonate (HCO3-)]. It's the presence of these--or any--ions in water that make it conductive, not the presence of dissolved CO2 (or any gas). Also, as I'm sure you know, it's this reaction of dissolved carbon dioxide with water that makes water slightly acidic, even in the most pristine and pure natural settings.

Thank you for a terrific column. This one caught my eye because when I taught chemistry, I used this as an example of the importance of differentiating between "dissolving" and "reacting." Also, I love the CO2-water example because that's how the lungs and the kidneys can help control the pH of the blood.

Back to the question, though. When I taught this, I added that the electrical conductivity can be used as a measurement of water purity (but only for dissolved ions). I like the fact that you included that pure water exposed to air makes the water conductive--and, I always added--conductive enough to be a serious safety hazard. Oh, I could go on. I enjoy my present position in nonprofit management, but sometimes I miss teaching chemistry!

Marilyn responds:

Thank you for the chemistry lesson, Patricia!
